Work Experience
June 1999 – March 2000 – Investment Analyst – Credit Suisse Private Banking, London. Internship • Responsible for Equity analysis. This included a complete review to exit smaller companies in the portfolio. As an analyst my role included the provision of recommendations to the portfolio manager including financial analysis. • Responsible for portfolio monitoring, tracking, profitability and trend analysis. April 2000- March 2005 – Relationship Manager, Commercial Banking HSBC Sri Lanka (Between 2003-2005, Relief Country Manager Maldives and Relationship Manager – Maldives Desk) Managed a portfolio of Corporate customers including Blue chip companies in Sri Lanka. The role included client acquisition and growing wallet share of the existing client base. In addition to a local portfolio, I was part of a team that was instrumental in commencing the Maldives lending desk. The main highlights during this period were as follows; • Demonstrated strong portfolio income growth on the Sri Lankan/Maldivian portfolio contributing to consistently strong performance appraisal ratings. This was achieved through winning new accounts, focusing on wallet share and providing Trade/Fex/Cash Management solutions. Project financing, ECA financing, and Trade packaged products were included. • The role included both customer acquisition & comprehensive risk evaluation of our clients from various sectors including Telecom, Manufacturing and Trading etc. • Headed the team that fully syndicated and arranged a project financing structure for a joint venture ultimately owned by a U.S based company in the hospitality sector, and the largest private company in the Maldives. Lead arranger. • Acted as Country Relief Manager for Maldives when required over a period of 2 years. This included overall control of Trade, Treasury, Cash, Credit and Marketing. March 2005 – September 2006 - Manager Operations Design & Development (ODD) - HSBC Responsible for leading the ODD team in conducting business reviews, system implementation and outsourcing. During this period the banks Imaging system was launched to move the bank towards a paperless office. Other key projects included automated deposit machines and loan processing turnaround times. October 2006 – February 2010: Senior Manager Payments & Cash Management (PCM) - HSBC Responsible for managing, leading, developing and driving the team towards targets for growth in transaction based non funds income, net interest income and automation. The team included Sales, Product & Client Management units. This role enabled me to establish senior level contacts with both Multinationals and leading local Corporates. The key areas of the role included the following; • Being part of the Sales team that was very successful in customer acquisition and meeting sales targets set by Head Office. This also included regional mandates for multinationals that required client discussions at overseas locations. • Driving the development of local propositions and product capability which has enabled HSBC to win new customer mandates despite core system gaps (e.g. distribution collection system, SLIBOR linked accounts, ERP integration etc.) • Wallet share growth contributing to an increase in NFI for the bank by growing relationships with existing customers. February 2010 – Nov 2012: Senior Manager Procurement - HSBC This is a dual role; 1) To manage the bank’s new LKR 1 billion Head Office Refurbishment project and 2) To drive cost savings in all bank procurement to achieve targets set by our regional office. The refurbishment project has enhanced my project management skills and includes working with architects, consultants, contractors and internal stakeholders. The scope includes design/layout discussions, business requirements, tender discussions/ negotiations and monitoring. January 2013 – April 2015: Manager Corporate Banking – Cargills Bank Limited On commencement of banking operations, the role was to lead a team of relationship managers focused on building a Corporate Banking base. The key highlights are as follows; • Being a new Bank there were no Corporate Banking customers and client acquisition was a challenge. Despite the Bank having no competitive advantage over competitor Banks we were able to successfully acquire multiple new customers ranging from listed companies to Middle Market customers. • Trade was the focus area to drive non-funds and foreign exchange income. May 2015 – Jan 2018 Assistant General Manager Corporate Banking & SME – Cargills Bank Limited Promoted to Head the Corporate Banking division handling a portfolio of customers both in Colombo and in branches reporting to CEO. The Trade division also reported into this role. Approximately 65% of the Bank’s asset book related to Corporate Banking customers at that time. The key highlights were as follows; • Relationships established with multiple trade based customers with planned fee income of near Rs. 100Mn • The team built an asset book with top tier names who are key market players in their respective industries. • With the onboarding of customers the relationship managers had to look for cross selling opportunities focusing not only on fee income and foreign exchange but also in terms of growing retail banking. March 2018 – todate Vice President Corporate Bank DFCC Bank Plc Managing a team that handles both short-term and long-term financing for Corporate Banking Customers. Achievements include the following; • Creating a sale culture where relationship managers aim for new business acquisition whilst growing wallet share from existing customers. • One of the largest deposit acquisitions from a single customer. • Multiple new business wins and new facilities from sectors ranging from Steel, pharmaceuticals, IT hardware etc. • Increasing trade wallet share from selected customers and breaking into Payments & Cash Management business • Effective restructuring/recovery of overdues for companies in financial difficulty. • Acquisition Financing
